OAKLAND — For past 8 years, train conductor Jim Batty has traveled along most of the nearly 1,600 miles of railroad tracks north of Los Angeles, stretching as far north as the 41 border and east to Reno from the Bay Area.

“The biggest part of my job is that I’m there for what hasn’t happened yet,” remarked Batty, an Amtrak conductor since 2010.

Capitol Corridor trains operated by Amtrak between Auburn and Sacramento to San Jose have killed 24 people along that stretch of Union Pacific railroad tracks from 2014 to now, according to Federal Railroad Administration data.
