Fremont, Union City mull expanding fees for affordable housing

Joe Geha Fremont and Union City are considering revisions or additions to their affordable housing impact fees.

Fremont and Union City are reevaluating the affordable housing impact fees they charge developers, with the goal of generating more revenue to create additional housing.

The Union City City Council voted Tue to accept the findings of a whole new study that clarifies how development of market-rate properties and commercial space can create a bigger need for affordable housing, according to the staff report.

The study was done by Keyser Marston Associates between 2015 and 2016 on behalf of abundant area cities, including Fremont, Hayward and San Leandro.
